Changing Your Makeup Routine for Winter

Aaaaah, Summer. Beautiful days at the beach swanning around in your bikini with golden skin and not a care in the world.

In comes Winter. Bitterly cold mornings spent lying in bed, using every ounce of will power you can muster, to get yourself up and ready for the day.

So what do you need to do to revamp your makeup routine so you can pretend you still have some will to live through the colder months?

It’s no secret Winter has the ability to steal every last drop of moisture from your skin. You can feel it. To combat this you need to up your moisturiser game dramatically. Instead of going straight in with your primer, make sure you moisturise first. Your skin, and your makeup, will thank you for it.

If you’re like me, you no longer have the glow of a goddess now that your days at the beach are a distant memory, and resemble a subtle shade of off white instead. If this is the case, be sure to match your foundation to your new found skin colour. Or get a fake tan (you should be faking it anyway given our cancer epidemic).

We’ve already established that Winter will just about suck your skin dry, so it’s a good idea to change your foundation over to a bottle of hydrating, liquid gold for the next few months. Chances are, your skin is going to need all the help it can get in the hydration department.

Hydrating in Winter be like....

Winter does have some positives, not many, but some. One of the big ones is that makeup doesn’t slide off as easily as it does in the Summer months. Take advantage of this by going with a dark shade of lipstick. Darker lippies have to be applied almost perfectly as they show up any mistakes a lot more than lighter colours, so wearing them during Summer can be tough.

But now that everything basically dries to your face within 3 seconds you can get to wearing that deep plum lippy you’ve been eyeing off. This is also a good time to get rid of your tinted lip glosses. You want a proper lippy this season.

You might be convinced you’re that cold you’re only minutes from death, but you don’t want to look like it. Use a cream blush to give you a gorgeous, natural glow on your cheeky cheeks. And be brave with your eyeshadow to add a bit of life back into your face. You don’t have to use crazy colours (unless that’s your thang), but use a shimmer shadow instead of a matte one in a neutral shade. You get the picture.

"Hi mum. Tell everyone I love them. I don't think I'm going to make it...."

Switching it up with the tips above should see you through the chilly months with as little pain as possible, and before you know it, we’ll be back on the beach, beer in hand, laughing with our friends like the superstars we are!
